The Long Beach Sea Base M.A.S.T. (Marine Apprenticeship Skills Training) Program introduces youth to skilled trades and maritime careers through career exploration, mentorship, and practical learning opportunities. Participants will be exposed to areas such as welding, electrical work, plumbing, engine repair, carpentry, port operations, logistics, and other trades while developing leadership, confidence, and teamwork. Participants will also be registered in the Sea Scouting program, providing opportunities to take part in on-the-water activities and maritime experiences. M.A.S.T. is designed to help young people explore different career paths, learn more about the skilled trades, and discover areas that may interest them for the future.

Participants will be able to learn these skills while working in our outdoor classroom on board a dry-docked Old No. 9. Old No. 9 is a historic 26-foot wooden fireboat built in 1942 by Higgins Industries for the U.S. Army, which later served as a utility and tugboat in local maritime operations.

Supported by grants from organizations like the Long Beach Community Foundation and the Long Beach Navy Memorial Heritage Association, the historic craft has been stewarded for youth training and community educational programs through programs like ours.
